There have been reports hitting the wires already talking about Monday’s (9/19/11) Two and a Half Men’s ratings on CBS. The press is reporting that Ashton Kutcher lived up to the hype as the new star of the show, replacing Charlie Sheen, and the season premier kicked off to a record setting 27.7 million viewers.
I have nothing against Ashton, and I do not know Charlie Sheen, so it is fair to say that I do not have a horse in this race. That being said, it was Charlie Sheen who was responsible for this record setting debut, not Ashton.
The logic is simple:
Charlie Sheen’s outrageous lifestyle, accented by his major binge which included a hooker terrified and locked in a bathroom, lead to some issues on the set of Two and a Half Men. Charlie’s lifestyle and the attention it garnered was only magnafied during a huge blow-out with the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre. That blow-up, and subsequent firing of Charlie, lead to a media frenzy in which Charlie took to the airwaves and launched his missiles of truth fueled by tiger’s blood. The social media world blew up as Charlie took to Twitter (breaking Ashton Kutcher’s previous record), YouTube, and other internet outlets to explain how he was a rock star from Mars.
The cause of his departure from the show, his manner of telling off his boss, and the attention he created following the firing all lead to a world that wondered what would happen when Two and a Half Men returned for the next season. The world wanted to know; what would the show be like without Charlie, how would they “kill” Charlie, how would Ashton fill Charlie’s shoes?
The ratings that Two and a Half Men had on Monday had nothing to do with the new season and it had very little to do with Ashton Kutcher. It had everything to do with Charlie Sheen. If Ashton was just added to the cast instead of replacing Charlie, the ratings would have been nowhere near what they were, and that is not arguable.
Chuck Lorre, and the rest of the team over at Two and a Half Men, need to say thank you to Charlie for delivering a huge (record breaking) audience to the show. Charlie Sheen pulled in nearly 28 million viewers without even having to show up. Not only is that insainly impressive, but word also came Monday that he and Warner Brothers have reached a settlement where they will pay Charlie $25 million dollars.
Record ratings without having to even be there, $25 million without having to do anything, a new clean lifestyle, reconciliation with his family, and a new show which will be a huge success….
